TOGETHER FRANKFORT
ANNUAL MEETING
Thursday, January 22, 2026, 5:30 PM
Frankfort Plant Board Clubhouse
Please join us for a delightful homemade chili supper followed by a discussion on the importance of local journalism - featuring Al Cross, Teri Carter, and Chanda Veno, with moderator Laura Glasscock.
This meeting is free and open to the public.
Al Cross - professor emeritus of journalism at the University of Kentucky, a political columnist, and former political writer for the Courier Journal (1989-2004) and national president (2001-02) of the Society of Professional Journalists. You can read his recent editorials in the Kentucky Lantern.
Teri Carter - opinion columnist in Anderson County and has been writing about Kentucky politics for the last decade. She has testified many times in school board meetings, in fiscal court to demand more transparency, and in the legislature against open carry and concealed-carry on college campuses. After the Old National Bank mass shooting in 2023, she volunteered for two years as communications leader for Moms Demand Action and serves on the board of Kentucky Humanities. You can find her work in the Kentucky Lantern, MSNBC, and the Washington Post.
Chanda Veno - editor of The State Journal in Frankfort. She became the first female editor in the newspaper's 124-year history in December 2018. Under her leadership, The State Journal has been named the state's best midsize paper at the Kentucky Press Association's annual Newspaper Excellence Awards for the last six consecutive years. In 2021, she became the first recipient of the Jon Fleischaker Freedom of Information Award for daily newspapers in Kentucky. The award, which is named for the author of the Open Meetings and Open Record Laws in Kentucky and recognizes his lifelong commitment to the First Amendment, is presented to a journalist for their use of public records to shed light on an important community matter and to affect public policy change. Veno was recognized for coverage of an investigation into sexual harassment allegations against former Franklin County Regional Jail Chief Deputy Jailer Kelly Rouse. In 2022, Veno was named Boone Newsmedia Journalist of the Year.
Laura Cullen Glasscock, moderator - editor The Kentucky Gazette. Laura is the editor and publisher of The Kentucky Gazette, a Frankfort-based public affairs journal. During the Kentucky legislative sessions, she provides political analysis on “Capital Chat,” a weekly program on 91.3 WUKY- FM (a National Public Radio affiliate), and she is an occasional panelist on KET’s public affairs program “Comment on Kentucky.”
In her decades-long career, she has won several awards for editorial writing and has served (via the Kentucky Press Association) as a judge for newspaper contests in several states.
She is a former assistant professor of journalism at Kentucky State University, where she was the adviser to the student newspaper, the Thorobred News. In 2024, the KPA awarded her and other campus advisers the Russ Metz Most Valuable Member Award.
Laura graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a double-major B.A. in public relations and English, from the University of Kentucky with an M.Ed. in secondary English, and from the University of Illinois-Springfield with an M.A. from the prestigious Public Affairs Reporting program.
Civics 101
Over the years Together Frankfort has organized and hosted a variety of events designed to inform and engage the citizens of Frankfort. New for 2024 is Civics 101 - a series of forums to help us understand issues important to our community.
Frankfort Plant Board has graciously agreed to let us meet in their community room, at 151 Flynn Ave., so please join us to hear local speakers address the issues, with time for questions and answers at the end.
In partnership with Liberty Hall Historic Sites, Together Frankfort will once again sponsor an Earth Day Celebration in the beautiful gardens of Frankfort’s historic Orlando Brown House. Please join us from 10-2 on Saturday, April 18, 2026.
Come help us celebrate our wonderful city, county, and planet!
>>> In case you missed them, you can find links to video recordings of many of our recent Civics 101 Forums on our Civic Engagement page.
