Vice President Mike Pence Visits Kentucky to Promote Trump Administration's

Drive to Repeal the Affordable Care Act

On Wednesday, July 12, Vice President Mike Pence traveled to Lexington, Kentucky to meet with the Administration's supporters about Congressional work to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.  Throughout the spring and early summer, Together Frankfort's members had burned up the phone lines, fax lines, and filled hundreds of postcards to Members of Congress about our opposition to this attack on Kentuckians.

The Vice President was joined by Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin, Representative Andy Barr (KY-06), and Representative Brett Guthrie (KY-02), who all participated in a "listening session" with Republican party leaders & other Trump supporters.

In previous visits to Kentucky, he had been met with protests. Together Frankfort's members joined many others who gathered outside Bryant's Rent-All in Lexington. We prepared and carried our signs that praised Obamacare and derided the ridiculous Trumpcare replacement plan. The day was extremely hot, the sun strong and sweltering, and we carried bottles of water and sunscreen to brave the day. We continued on and persevered.

In an interesting twist, Together Frankfort's folks were following Governor Bevin's efforts to replace the Affordable Care Act in Kentucky. Murray Wood, a Together Frankfort Coordinator, carefully monitored Kentucky's public hearings on the Medicare waiver process.

The Courier Journal pointed out that "Though Pence is calling for Congress to abolish Obamacare, as Indiana governor he actually took advantage of the law to expand Medicaid coverage to tens of thousands of low-income Hoosiers. But it was nothing like Kentucky's expansion, where 440,000 people joined the Medicaid rolls under former Gov. Steve Beshear.  And Bevin is modeling his plan after Indiana's."
